Ototoka Falls, WHANGANUI

This year I wrote a 20 for 2020 list. On that list was 2 things I want to do thia year, inspired by Gretchen Rubin. Now, last year I did a 19 for 2019 list and achieved probably about half of them. So some things are a carry over. And other things are new.

One “goal” that I am really excited about is number 6 on the list: Visit 20 Waterfalls in 2020. At the end of the year I’ll do a blog post with all the waterfalls we visit in 2020 (if we ever get out of lockdown) because some of them aren’t going to get their own blog post.

This waterfall is number 6 of 20 (and closest to home): Ototoka Falls.

Ototoka Falls, north-west of Whanganui.

Ototoka Falls shares its name with the beach nearby, and is a 25minute drive from Whanganui (heading towards New Plymouth). The closest town is Maxwell, where you will spot a small yellow sign pointing towards the sea on Ototoka Beach Road.

The falls are probably about 10m high, and a classic plunge waterfall. You can view them from a boardwalk/bridge, with beautiful views over the ocean to the other side.

Just an FYI: about 7km of the road is gravel. But it’s well worth the drive. And there’s a great spot for freedom camping well above the beach.

View to the beach from the car park

The beach (and the cliffs nearby) is a great spot for fossil hunting, which we have previously done. When we arrived at the beach we remembered that we had actually visited when we were new to the area. I’ll include some pics from exploring the beach back then (they’re low quality soz since they are taken from my instagram)

Happy Exploring

(& don’t stop chasing waterfalls)

Xx
