We visited this falls in Winter 2019, but I really wanted to include it in my waterfalls collection because it is one of the most beautiful and accessible falls we have ever visited in the north island of New Zealand.
Mangawhero Falls are a 28m ‘plunge’ fall in the heart of Tongariro National Park. It’s close to the road, on the way up to Turoa Ski-field on Ohakune Mountain Road. There is a short 5-10min walking track where along which you can see the falls from various view points.
We visited on a snowboarding trip when the weather was bad and the mountain was closed for the day. Afterwards we headed to Ohakune and had lunch and coffee at one of the many sweet cafes.
This fall is a definite must – see if you’re visiting the area, but unfortunately you can’t get very close or down the bottom due to safety controls. There are a number of other falls on this road, however several of them have long walks to get to and unfortunately due to the weather and a couple days planned of snowboarding coming up, we didn’t have time to visit. We will definitely back for more exploring one day.
Happy Exploring
(& don’t stop chasing those waterfalls)
