Cathedral Cove, COROMANDEL

This is one of New Zealand’s most iconic spots. You’ve probably seen it all over Instagram, Pinterest, tik tok and any blog post about travelling in the North Island of New Zealand. It’s worth 100% of the hype. But, if you’re like me, you might not realise it’s actually a bit of a hike to get there.

Track facts:

  • 1hr – 1.5 hours return
  • 2.5k each way
  • Well defined track (stroller and kid friendly)
  • Moderate fitness required (more if you are carrying/pushing a child)
  • Reasonable footwear required (ie. this is doable but won’t be fun in jandels-even though your destination is a beach)

In their summer/busy season the car park becomes a drop-off zone only because it’s such a popular spot. If you go in off peak season the parking is unbelievably expensive for NZ ($15 for 4 hours) and if you don’t pay you will be fined. There is a reasonably priced shuttle service to the car park from Heihe, which I would definitely recommend in the summer months.

You 100% need sunscreen, and lots of it, as there is little to no shade on the track and at the beach (unless you spend your whole time in the cave formation)

The walk itself is relatively laid back, although steep in sections (especially near the beach, you will climb many many stairs back up). The views the entire way are sooo good-beautiful Coromandel views that are so unique to the area, but still feel like “classic New Zealand”

Once you’re at the beach, it’s time to chill 🙂 you can swim, take some sort of activity (picnic, beach volleyball, sandcastle supplies) or just relax and enjoy the beach and ocean sounds and watch boats and kayakers come in.

Anyway, I can’t believe it took me soo long to get to this iconic beach, but I can tell you it’s definitely worth the hype, and I will 100% be back someday!

Happy beach-I got

Xx
